If I had only kissed your lips,
If you had only held me a little bit longer in that embrace,
If I had only squeezed a little bit harder,
If I could have only known you were still in love with me in that moment.
It could have been the sweetest goodbye.
“You’ll always be the standard to be measured against,
But no longer the unchallenged epitome.
I’ve seen what is out there,
And I realize that you are not the only answer to my happiness.
In so many ways, I am free of your shadow.
I am me- not us.
And I am stronger than I could’ve ever imagined.
You built me up and I thought you had broken me down.
But still I stand, on my own two feet,
No longer defined by another person.
thank you for all you put me through,
Now I am powerful beyond belief.”
Wrote this about my first love. I loved him for a very long time, and felt certain that no other man would ever compare to him. It was so liberating to find that those feelings fade. It takes nothing away from the relationship, but discovering that your happiness is not dependent on someone else is empowering.
